The
Rules of Capture the flag
- The new rules are actually very simple. The idea is to
get the other teams flag and bring it back to the base, when you do this on most servers
you will get the following points:
- 10 points - for your team
capturing the flag
- 5 extra points - for
being the person to capture the flag
- This is the standard which may be changed on some
servers. A normal frag still counts as a point, but to reward those team members who stay
at home and guard the flag they are rewarded with :
- 2 points - for fragging
an opponet with your flag.
- 1 point - for returning
your flag.
- The one key point you must keep in mind is that you
have to touch the other teams flag to your flag in your base in order to register a
capture. If you get the other teams flag and come back to an empty base, then you have to
wait for your flag to be returned.
- To return a flag you must touch it not just shoot down
the person with it.
- All people start a level by spawning at their base,
look out you don't get telefragged.
- Weapons are not carried over to the next level in a
attempt to start from scratch and make things fair.
- Everytime you die and respawn you start with 50 points
of green armor.
- Advanced Rules
- There are now assists in the recent versions of CTF.
If you return your flag and with in about 10 seconds your team captures the flag you get a
bonus as well as the capturer.
- Now not only will shooting the person with the flag
give you a bonus, but if you shoot any opponent within your base area you will get a
bonus. This means you don't have to wait for a person to take your flag before you can get
those extra points.
- Another addition to the recent versions is the
defending the flag carrier bonus. If you shoot people down that are shooting your flag
carrier, you get a defense bonus just as if you were defending your base. So help out your
flag carriers.
The Runes
- The runes are an added bonus to the ctf action. The
four runes give you some advantages over your opponents. Some things to note about the
runes are:
- Once you pick up a rune you're stuck with it.
- Runes respawn every few minutes so don't worry that
you won't see that rune again if you died in the lava.
- Don't be too picky, if you see a rune and you don't
already have one, get it. They don't usually sit around for very long.
- Know that there are certain spawning points for runes,
so when you start a level the runes generaly pop up in the same locations. Get to know
some of these points so you can quicly acquire them.
- Here is a listing of runes and their enhancements:
|
- Elder Magic (Regeneration).
This is a great rune that regenerates your health at a rate of 4 a second. Also if you get
a 100 health power up, your health will stay above 100 so that you can possibly get up to
250 health. This is a good offensive rune, because you can take some hits and recharge on
the run. |
|
- Earth Magic (Resistance).
This rune will cut your assailants hits in half so it could take, depending on armor, 4 to
5 rockets to kill you. This is also a good offensive rune because you can go into a base
and take the flag while rockets are pelting into you and only take minimal damage. |
|
- Hell Magic (Haste). This
will double the speed that your shotguns, grenade launcher and rocket launcher. Even if
you have a wimpy weapon you can beat people down easily, expecially with a close range
double barrelled shotgun. And if you get a rocket launcher you can mow the best people
down with a spray of rockets. For this reason a rocket launcher with haste is good for
defensive and offensive. |
|
- Black Magic (Strength). This
is possibly the most coveted rune, allowing double the damage hits for all weapons and
just think what happens with the quad (X8), death to all. Just be careful not to get to
close when using a rocket or grenade launcher, the explosions have a large radius. This is
probably the best defensive rune along with a rocket launcher. One rocket can
kill just about anyone, so you could be the one man guarding machine. |
The Flags
- The flags of course are the new graphics added for
CTF. In version lower than 3.5 the flags look like the gold and blue keys that you find
when you are playing single player they look like this:
- In the new version of ctf 3.5 the flags have changed
to actual waving read and blue flags that look like:
- In the early versions of CTF the person holding the
flag will look as if they have a quad or pentagram of protection, shining bright. But in
the more recent versions you can see the person shining and the flag on them.

Bots
"Bot" is used to describe a computer controlled player,
typically one that can duplicate the feel of multiplayer Quake. The strength of a bot is
found in its artificial intelligence (AI), and some member of the Quake community have
created some surprisingly intelligent bots. These programs are great for replicating the
multiplayer experience for a single player, and can be a great tool for improving a
player's skill.
The dark side of the bot is the bot that controls the actions of a human
player in multiplayer action. The most famous of these is the StoogeBot. The StoogeBot
is a client side program that performs all of the aiming and firing for the player. The
technology is impressive, but it eliminates skill as a factor. Unless a user has reworked
the StoogeBot code, you can spot a StoogeBot, by the letters "SGBT" prefacing
the player's name. Including the words "No Bots" on the server's opening screen
will prevent the use of the bot, unless the code has been rewritten. Fortunately, several
people have been working on a patch that will detect a StoogeBot, even if the code has
been hacked, and will remove the bot from the server. The LoefBot is another another
bot similar to the Stooge. James Loe is the author of the LoefBot, and defends his bot
this way: "I wrote the LoefBot because it could be written. The atom bomb was
invented because it could be invented, not because it was needed or wanted."

The Zeus Bot
The ultimate bot for Quake is the Zeus Bot by Jonathan E. Wright, aka
Nelno the Amoeba. The latest information on the Zeus Bot can be found at Inverse Reality, Nelno's
homepage. The bot will currently swim, dodge rockets, target with deadly accuracy,
and much more. If you are going to try a bot, this is the one to download.
Unfortunately for fans of the Zeus, Wright is now working for Ion Storm, so further development of the
Zeus Bot is doubtful.
The Reaper Bot
The ReaperBot,
by Stephen Polge, is one of the best bots
available, even though it hasn't been developed in over one year. The superior AI of the
Reaper allows it to learn your particular style of play and adapt to take advantages of
your weaknesses. The Reaper is difficult to kill because it is excellent at avoiding your
shots, but is then deadly accurate with the placement of its own shots. Poolge ceased
development of the Reaper at version 0.81, but it is still the best bot available. Poolge
is now working for Epic on their much anticipated release, Unreal.
The CTF Bot by Drew Davidson is
another great bot to try for Capture the Flag. The current version of the CTF Bot is the beta
for 1.30
